Undergraduate Labs Safety Quiz

The Project

Every lab class requires that 100% of enrolled students achieve a passing score on a lab safety exam before the first day of class in order to stay enrolled. Up to this point, this was a messy and time consuming paper process. We were asked to create a custom web application which would include a student interface with training content, safety quiz, and grading, as well as a staff interface that would show the graded roster of students and flag those who had not passed, with additional administrative options.

My Role

Ux Lead, Technical project manager

Research and Design

I started with a simple Kanban board and met with the staff administrators to solicit understanding of the business process and user requirements. I built a low-fi static prototype to validate the design with staff and then made it dynamic to perform usability testing with students. I worked together with a full stack developer to realize the design and perform further usability testing in QA, including accessibility testing for a hearing-impaired student. This was important because the safety training materials included videos with sound.

Outcome

We successfully launched on a very tight timeline before the beginning of Fall classes in 2015. The quiz has been in use since then for upwards of 15,000 students per year.
